Find an article about a global issue in an academic discipline you are comfortable with and describe the features of that article/identify disciplinary methods. For example, if you are a Kinesiology major, you may want to look up forms of physical exercise in grade school for a country like… Brazil, perhaps. If you plan to go major in business, another example would be to look at an academic article that addresses business trends in India. You can use an article from another class or from previous class, as long as the article is academic in nature and has a global context included. If you’re having trouble thinking of a discipline, take another look at the list of disciplines in the Repko, et al. chapter you just read. The authors’ descriptions of those disciplines might also help serve as points of departure for your own discussions: How do you see that disciplinary perspective functioning in the article you’re reviewing? Your paper should be at least 500 words and posted. Some key concepts to this assignment–the essay could break down easily into a 5-paragraph essay. One body paragraph might speak to the content of the essay you chose and how that content relates to a specific discipline or disciplines: what makes this a subject for biology, or literary studies, or computer science, etc.? Another paragraph could describe the ways the author(s) gathered data/examples/knowledge: how did they make meaning? A third should probably deal with the form of the essay–it’s genre, components: what are it’s component parts? Think about your previous discussion on movies: what are the “features” that makes it a particular genre? This is the approach you want to use to think about your academic article. E.g. What about the article makes it part of Health Communication or whatever discipline you are examining? This project works best with a scholarly article rather than ones composed for general audiences like the kinds you might find through simple google searches. (You won’t be using The New York Times here, in other words, but an article from a peer-reviewed academic journal.) It also works best with an article that is NOT ABOUT a specific discipline but IS actually an example of that discipline in action. Take some time to peruse indexes for peer-reviewed articles. Overall, keep in mind that this is a paper about how a discipline makes and conveys knowledge about a global issue. It is NOT about a global issue. You’ll summarize the global issue being discussed in the article you choose but only to make a claim about the ways that topic/focus relates to a particular discipline or set of disciplines. Keep the article in focus, not the issue itself.
