Carisa is usually a happy, outgoing 5-year-old. However, lately you have noticed that she has become quite reserved and is reluctant to play with friends. She also is often the last child to arrive and to leave the classroom when it is time to go home.
Carissa’s parents have been separated for several months. Since then she lives with her mother and her boyfriend one week and stays with her father who lives nearby during the alternating weeks. This morning while you were helping Carisa with some math problems, you observed three small bruises on her upper right arm which are approximately 1/2-inch in diameter, equally spaced, and blue in color. She also has a 1-inch bruise that is turning yellow on her right cheek. When you ask Carisa how she got the bruises she avoids eye contact and says that “I fell off the swing at the park.”
