How much did Japanese society change between 1600 and 1868? What were the most significant changes?
The dynasty of Tokugawa lasted for about 250 years in Japan, and during this period, the region witnessed peace and prosperity, including the rise of a new merchant class and growing urbanization. The dynasty also guarded against external influence by making sure Japanese society remained free of westernization, especially Christianity. The period concluded with the Meiji Restoration that saw the country reinstating emperor leadership to eliminate the problems caused by the decaying feudal system.
