Sigmund Freud came up with the psychoanalytic theory of personality development where he argued that personality emerges from three critical structures, including the id, ego, and superego. On his part, Erik Erikson argued that personality develops in a predetermined way by adhering to the eight stages of psychosocial development. From the two, Erikson’s theory appears more expansive because it not only focuses on social and environmental factors but also extends into adulthood.
