Racism is the belief in the dominance of some races to others. This occurs when some races are seen better than others and the superiority complex of races. (Banton, 2018). Racism is characterized differently in regards to the type of racism. Racism results to discrimination towards people based on their race. Different types of racism include systematic racism which involves racism articulated in communal and political institutions. It is emphasized by variables such as treasure, felonious justice, occupation, housing, amount of income, education and radical power among other factors. Cultural racism is a form of racism which is in regards of folk differences in ethnical groups and racial groups. Racism needs to eliminated to avoid harmful effects caused by various forms of discrimination to build a multicultural and diverse community.
Different cultures have different beliefs and this at times causes conflicts among the racial groups and hence racism increases due to the misunderstandings. (Van Dijk 2015). The idea of racism comes up with some ideologies that human beings can be subdivided into native groups and exclusive biological entities known as races and that the native groups can be ranked as inferior or superior. (Bell, 2018). There have been many major historical incidences of racism; apartheid in South Africa and slave trade in West Africa. In the recent cases of racism, the black race has been the mostly affected by racism in many fields including football. Black footballers have been racially abused by the white. Racism has resulted to many occurrences including xenophobia and racial segregation.
Racism occurs when a certain group or person is discriminated on the bases of culture and nativity. When this occurs, stigma is a resultant outcome. The concepts of racial stigma aim to enquiry underneath the cognitive acts of individuals (Banton, 2018). By racially abusing a person or a group of people makes them feel inferior in the community. This stigmatizes them and their performance is reduced at all angles. For instance, in case of footballers, their game play may be majorly affected by racial discrimination. The stigma faced by any racially discriminated party can lead to block realization of any human potential as they lack opportunities to showcase their innate capabilities.
The productivity of any disadvantaged group is lower than other groups. Racial discrimination makes the race at stake loose many opportunities including education, employment, court justice and talent showcasing. There are not many opportunities for such people. The stigmatized underclass culture of today is as a result of oppressive history majorly by discrimination where racial discrimination is dominant. Racism should be countered in order to erase stigmatization caused by it in the society. This will promote social cohesion among people. Those faced by the challenge of stigmatization will be able to come out and take time to release their potential and exploit their inabilities.
Racism has created a society where people fail to trust each other. This has caused a lot of damage to both the communities and individuals. According to research by the university of Manchester in 2018, racism at work places negatively impacts the working qualities of those involved. This because there will be an ongoing feeling of anger, sadness and depression. This has reduced the ability of individuals to relate with each other and achieve their future goals. The workers at BME said that their experiences on racism in the work place negatively impact their work and personal lives, making them feel less confident at work and isolation. It also found that it has negative impact on people’s health including children’s health.
Racism creates toxic environment for anyone to ply their usual trade. (Fredrickson, 2015). For success, productivity is highly required in any business outlet. Racism counters all that and reduces the effectiveness of people. Also, good health is a basic need in the current world and it should be upheld but with racism all that fades away and people health’s are negatively affected by racism. It has also resulted to poor relationships among people with the differences acting as a barrier for social cohesion. Everyone is responsible with the task of fighting racism. By fighting racism, life standards in general will improve. People will be free, business would rise and the economy would row. Workers in different organizations would work without any fear of discrimination.
Racism in school has impacted both the individuals’ diversity as well as their earning environment. Ideally, education is a key asset to be given to any child regardless of the race or nativity. It is a secondary and vital need to any human being. Many term education as the key to success. Background diversity has a great effect on the ability of students to learn. Every child requires the same rights and the same opportunities to learning. (Troyna and Hatcher 2018). In some cases, students lack opportunities for healthy learning as a result of segregation and isolation due to the difference in race. By racially abusing a student, it will result to negativity in the education of a student. Racism in children is a result of the environment they grow up in. They learn racism from the environment they were brought up in, whereby if the surrounding were racists they also end up racists.
Racism has resulted to minimal interaction among children of different races and hence education is not effective enough. (Macedo and Gounari, 2015). Education involves sharing of ideas among members of the society. By curbing racism, the education standards will improve. This will happen when all the students are treated the same and are given the same opportunities to exploit. When ideas are shared equally among students, knowledge will be passed on well.
Racism has occurred for a long time and its results have been negative in various ways. In line with the arguments above, it is clear that racism has harmful effects that need to be eliminated within the community. It has led to violence among races and it has caused segregation and the unity in races have been split. Racism should be stopped since no race is superior than the other. By stopping racism, the standards of life are improved in all fields.
